UConn School Law Certificate Courses

The School Law Online Graduate Certificate is comprised of four required courses (12-credits in total) that are offered in the fall or spring semesters.

EDLR 6002 - Legal Issues in School Employment (3 credits), Fall

This course examines the legal issues that arise with regards to employment in K-12 education, such as tenure, employment discrimination, due process, and collective bargaining. Modules include certificate and licensure; tenure; speech rights of employees; privacy; due process; employment discrimination; and collective bargaining.


EDLR 6004 - Legal Issues in Educational Technology (3 credits), Fall

This course examines the legal issues that arise in the use of educational technology in K-12 education, such as intellectual property, social media, cyberbullying, sexting, and virtual schools. Modules include intellectual property; liability; students; teachers and social media; students with disabilities; and cyber schools.


EDLR 6001 - Legal Issues in Student and Parent Rights (3 credits), Spring

This course examines the legal issues that arise with respect to student and parent rights, such as search and seizure, student discipline, speech and religion, and homeless children. Modules include an introduction to educational law; religion; expression and association; search and seizure; school attendance (including rights of homeless children); instructional program; due process; tort liability; and defamation and student records.


EPSY 5119 - Policy, Law and Ethics in Special Education (3 credits), Spring

The purpose of this course is twofold: (1) to interpret and apply current special education policy and law to practice, and (2) to provide the skills to be professional and ethical educational leaders and advocates for students with disabilities.
